Why aren’t Ocean Liners a more common form of Travel?

Cruise ships are wonky, boxy, unstable monstrosities that capsize in a light storm and transatlantic air travel is uncomfortable (in my opinion at least), why aren’t ocean liners more popular? Sure they’re slower than planes, and vibrations make the desire for speed a bit less so, but they’re beautiful, elegant, (usually) more stable than the average cruise ship and are generally much faster than them (SS United States was suspected to reach above 40 knots or so)… shouldn’t there be more than just the QM2 in service right now?
